Permanent hair removal
Share
Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) are the best techniques for getting rid of hair for a long time.
The principle is simple: the laser or pulsed light sends out a light which will be captured by the hair pigment ( melanin ) and then transformed into heat destroying the gland which produces the hair.
Which is more effective? Laser or pulsed light?
= both have the same effectiveness
How does it work?
Understanding the hair cycle
The hair growth cycle consists of 3 phases : cells of epidermal origin, located in the bulb, ensure the growth of a hair by proliferating ( anagen phase ), then when it is old ( catagen phase ), they give birth to a new hair which pushes back the previous one until it falls out ( telogen phase ).
The first phase called anagen phase is that of hair growth.
At any given time, about 85% of our hair is in this phase. During the anagen phase, the hair is connected to the bulb and has an abundance of melanin . This is the ideal stage to practice the hair removal session.
In fact, the pulsed light or laser is attracted to the hair rich in melanin , it travels along the hair and transforms into heat at the bulb. This heat will destroy this bulb.
The catagen phase
During this period the hair is no longer in contact with the bulb. The hair stops growing and the production of melanin is stopped. About 3 to 4% of our hair is in this phase at any given time and therefore cannot be reached by pulsed light or laser.
The telogen phase
This is the phase of hair loss caused by the growth of new hair. Approximately 10-13% of our hair is in this phase at any given time and cannot be reached by pulsed light or laser.
IPL or laser hair removal treatment only works in the active growth phase ( anagen phase ). Since not all hairs in a given area are in the growth phase at the same time, not all hairs will be affected during the hair removal session. This is why 8 treatment sessions are generally required . (Maintenance sessions may be necessary)
Does this work for everyone?
The sessions will be effective if your skin is light and your hair is dark.
The sessions will be ineffective on white hair and on skin that is too dark.
